Turned out easier than I though. Now the refugium is back on track. After increasing the feedings (added an automatic feeder) and fish stock in the tank, I now stand at a rock solid 0.25 ppm Nitrates and 0.02 ppm PO4. Cut a hole for the bulkhead on the side you want the water pumped into the Refugium. I used a 1/2" bulkhead, I think the size works better for the smaller size of this container. Install the bulkhead using teflon tape for a nice, tight seal. I used an elbow coming out of the bulkead and attached clear hose to that.

The larger the refugium, the better. The smallest sensible size is 20% of the aquarium volume. I know of cases where the refugium had the same volume as the aquarium, or was even larger than the main aquarium. I recommend Chaetomorpha or chaeto. They grow fast, but do not grow sexually like Caulerpa sp. (which can cause problems in the aquarium).
